Soccer-mad Amberley schoolboy Eddie Trewinnard joined David Beckham when he walked onto the pitch in front of 30,000 roaring fans at Wellington's Westpac Stadium on Saturday night.
Eddie, seven, carried the match ball onto the pitch just ahead of Beckham at the outset of the LA Galaxy and Wellington Phoenix game after meeting the soccer legend for a 10-minute chat the day before.
The dream weekend was organised for Eddie, who is 2½ years into a three-year chemotherapy treatment, by the Make-a-Wish Foundation.
Eddie said Beckham was "a very nice guy" and that he enjoyed the walk onto the pitch.
"I was a little nervous, but when I got there in front of all the people I felt like I was a star and enjoyed it," he said.
Eddie's father, Tony Trewinnard, said his son and Beckham spent their 10-minute meeting on Friday talking exclusively about football.
"They talked about soccer," Trewinnard said.
"Eddie asked him if he could share some of his tricks and he replied that he did not have many tricks, but his trick was to keep practising all sorts of different shots ...
"I got the impression Beckham enjoyed the opportunity to spend 10 minutes just talking about soccer," he said.
Eddie, who plays for Amberley Soccer Club, declared the trip "the best four days of his life" when he returned from Wellington yesterday.
